I just love Valentine’s. Red is one of my favorite colors and what girl doesn’t love hearts. We doodled them on our notebooks and notes. We learned to fold paper in half and cut a perfectly symmetrical heart. Mrs. Grossman’s had the perfect heart sticker that we collected. And the overarching theme of love is just plain nice.

Some fun things i’ve seen online: sweetheart pops and  Fine Heart Photography

I decided that it would be fun to bring back some of that elementary nostalgia. So, I’ve planned a fun Valentine’s craft brunch for a few friends – mostly in my SS class.

I’m planning on having 4 card stations set up with all the elements. I’m also planning on having some delicious little brunch items. My friend Ashley gave me a heart muffin pan which will be perfect for this.

I’ll post some of the recipes once I decide. In the meantime, I baked these cookies after seeing them on April’s blog. DELICIOUS for sure. Rich and chocolately.

And apparently I have not been added to TWD for some reason so I’ll just have to do my own baking posts. Maybe they’ll follow TWD, maybe not.

JD is heading to Chi-town Friday for the big catalog printing and I’m looking forward to spending time with Mom. Hopefully I can take a day off work so we can have some fun time too.

That’s the new word. It’s amazing how quickly she picks up words. I’ll really have be to sure not to say crap or sucks or other inappropriate words for that matter. She’s babbling all the time and picking sounds and there is even inflection in her little voice. Ball, Dog (or Doc), Dadda, Mama, Uh Oh, and numerous other sounds. I think the most fun thing to watch is her point at something and say what sounds to us like, “What’s that?” So stinkin cute I can’t stand it.

And here she is this morning with Daddy’s glasses. She pulled them off his face and said, “uh oh.” and giggled. So sweet.

img_0273 I love watching her do new things too. Last night in the tub I left the water running. She would touch it with both hands and try and grab it. Then she turned her head around and let the water run on her head and smiled and smiled. Her moves are so deliberate. She’s a thinking and figures things out. She doesn’t tend to get frustrated when she can’t get what she wants or do what she wants. She’s completely on the mend. After a nasty bout of the croup that turned into a nastier cold we are almost well. A little runny nose and a little cough here or there, but mostly well.

And I’m on the mend too. Yesterday was the first day since the surgery that I started to feel like it’s healing. Thank you God – I needed some relief.

And it’s Friday and I’m so thankful for the weekend. JD is probably working this weekend on the catalog and I’ll be solo with G. It’s the coldest it’s been so far in Memphis  – 14 when I left the house this morning – but it will warm up to the 40’s and be sunny this weekend. I’m also looking forward to the long weekend. 🙂

Yesterday during Chapel at school, the principal played and excerpt of MLK’s “I have a dream” speech. I was reminded that things strike me differently at different times of my life. I’m not sure if it’s that I’m 37 or that I have a daughter, or that I am around high school kids every day, but something resonated with me like it had never before when I read that speech yesterday. More to come on that on Monday…

And hopefully I’ll have my Mac laptop back. It’s been gone to the “depot” for a week and half. I’m missing it. I want it back. I’ve probably needed the break from constant connection and I hope to keep that in mind when I have  it back, but I have missed it.

So happy Friday to everyone! It’s time for my class – Visual Communications. We’ll see how the students handled the “Black Box Exercise.” They never cease to amaze me in their creative solution to problems.

This is what I hope to by my first “official” TWD post. This week’s selection comes from Rebecca of Ezra Pound Cake and she chose Savory Corn and Pepper Muffins found on page 6 of Baking From My Home to Yours by Dorie Greenspan.

I thought the recipe was very easy, colorful and fast. I kind of wish they had risen a little more like a muffin because they were just sweet enough to leave me wanting a dessert. I didn’t choose to put in the jalapeno. I did use everything else and followed the instructions perfectly.

More to come on baking and other stuff.

Happy Tuesday – although it’s late!

new-years-new-york-cityI welcome 2009. We’ve had a really lovely new year. Although we were asleep when the clock struck midnight, we celebrated this morning with pancakes and plenty of QT. JD got a little mini vacation…in the yard. He loves working in the yard and since G came along that has been minimal. I made a big pot of White Bean Chicken Chili and put away Christmas decorations. All that’s left are the wreaths on the windows and moving it all to the attic.

The Cheesecake was and still is delicious. It’s the perfect consistency, although my crust was not crunchy. We have more than half left. I’m going to enjoy the baking group and am considering an Ina Garten recipe group. I love her recipes and style. They are simple and you can find all the ingredients.

Garner is officially cruising. She is moving around the coffee table trying to grab whatever is there and pull it off the table. She stood at the back door and watched her daddy rake leaves. She stood at the windows upstairs and talked to the world. She loves drinking from our glasses and is starting to eat more solid foods. Green beans didn’t go over so well, so I had to puree them in the mini Cuisinart. Garner will mimick sounds and gestures. If you giggle and shake your head she’ll do the same. She is ALL over the place and wants anything she shouldn’t have….like my computer….right now. 🙂 She will hug you and hug her little baby. She smiles when she sees JD and I kiss. She will entertain herself for a little while with some of her toys but mostly she wants to be on the move

Mom and dad got her a xylophone for Christmas and she loves playing it. It’s interesting to see what toys she enjoys and which she doesn’t – it changes every day. I think her favorite is the Direct DVR and the receiver.

Tomorrow is my last day off, excluding the weekend. I’ve been reminiscing about our last vacation which was a long weekend in New Orleans for my b’day. That was a year ago. I don’t think I remember the last time I went a year without a vacay. I need one…I REALLY need one.

This is a test of the i spy beauty system. This is only a test.
